Brave And Patriotic Act: NYSC Corp Member Dr. Esther Puts Smiles On Faces

One objective of the National Youth Service Scheme is to contribute to the development of the country. To properly equip them for the attainment of this objective, corps members belong to various Community Development Service (CDS) groups through which they reach their host communities and the nation at large. DEBO DUROWAIYE writes on a youth corps medical doctor who has been applying her cognitive skills and training for the benefit of her host community, Oyo town, and its environs.
Dr. Esther Irabor Agbator , a Batch C Corps member with state code OY/2013C/2345 and NYSC/BEN/242612,  is serving in the Oyo-East Local Government having her primary assignment at the State Hospital, Oyo is carrying out a personal community development  project with aim of fulfilling the objectives of the NYSC.
The project being carried out in three ways include equipping and reviving the moribund eye clinic in the hospital, providing eyes test and distributing frames and lenses for residents  with eye problems.
Until recently, residents with eye problems have no access to health care services due to non-existing facilities and qualified personnel.
As a result, those in dire need of services travel to either LAUTECH Teaching Hospital or Bowen Teaching Hospital both in Ogbomoso or the University College Hospital in Ibadan.
However, on resumption of duty, Dr. Agbator resuscitated the eye clinic by procuring the needed equipment. She thereafter set the ball rolling by organising awareness programme
for residents thereby saving people with eye problems from endangering their lives along the deadly Oyo/Ogbomoso road. The humble, caring, dedicated and dutiful optometrist who hails from Ekpoma in Edo State resumes work before 8 amwaiting for the patients.
To the amazement of patients, Dr.Agbator consults and provides eye test free of charge.
Frames and lenses are also being distributed free for hundreds of impoverished residents . Fellow corps membersare also not left out
At Vanguard of Educating Rural Child

.The youth corps member is also at the vanguard of Educating A Rural Child
(ERC), a pet project of wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi.
Two of the patients, Mr. Nuru Ola-oluwa and  Mrs Lydia Ojoayo burst into tears of joy and  commended the corps member after they were tested and provided with eye lenses and frames free of charge. Both the middle-aged said they had spent a lot of money to the
extent of being indebted in the course of moving from one hospital to another for eye care  delivery.
Speaking  in an exclusive interview with WESTERN POST, Dr. Agbator said
the personal efforts provided her opportunity to impact positively on the development of the ancient town and its environs, while also enabling her to appreciate other Nigerians.
“You can do your CDS either individually or in groups. It is all year round, just like the primary assignment. Individual corps members also carry out personal projects as a means of extending their love to their host communities and state of deployment at large. I observed
that a lot of  people are really suffering from abject poverty and cannot afford  the cost  of their healthcare.  We can’t watch them dying with the ailment but to show concern and assist even where government is seen to be lacking”.
